Jessica 3/4? Britney: 1/2? Ashlee: 1/4?

Who is the Queen with the highest octave voice if not MC? CBS News,
citing the Guiness Book of World Records, says Mariah is an 8-octave chick:

'90s Music

Before her eight-octave voice landed her in the Guinness Book of World
Records, this butterfly was sweeping floors in a beauty salon.

A. Celine Dion.
B. Minnie Riperton.
C. Mariah Carey.

Can't get the site's answer page to work, but I know Mariah was a beauty
salon floor sweeper--In Style Mag in 2004 had a pic of her in a beauty salon
holding a broom:

"Entertainment Tonight was on location when InStyle took Mariah back in
time to recapture the sultry singers' brief stint working at a NYC beauty
salon."

http://www.mariahcarey.com/mariahcarey/news/index.las?month=6&year=2004

"And MARIAH CAREY was a beauty school dropout who only lasted three
hours working as a sweeper at New York's Dramatics beauty salon. When her
boss tried to nickname her Echo, the Columbia recording artist took a
hike -- or rather a bus ride -- home."

Julie Andrews - 4. How many is Celine Dion? Spears probably refuses to
be tested. Might break the instrument. When she was asked by a British TV
host a few years ago to sing a cappella she gave him the evil eye!

Mariah does not have an 8 octave voice, that was just a lot of hype
they used to push her when she first came out. Mariah has 4 to 5.

Whitney in her hey day could cover 3.

I would say Britney and Ashely could cover 1 octave while Jessica would
have 2.

Celine could cover between 2 and 3

Which reminds me of Glenn Gould's description of
Petula Clark's voice: "Fiercely loyal to her one
great octave." --r

No. 4 1/2 to 5, but not 8. She might be able to HIT notes outside that
range, but singing them is something else. Let's add that even if she
only had two octaves, she could still outsing Mariah Carey any day of
the week.

Jeff Buckley is said to have had an eight octave vocal range but I
suspect this might be similar to what chilled said about Cleo Laine's
range (i.e. can hit a wide range of notes)

What about Odetta Holmes? She has a phenomenal range.

For eight octaves one would have to have a range from the lowest tones
that, say, James Earl Jones can sing to the highest notes Mariah can
hit in her pipes register, and then two more octaves. I know a man who
is a bariton who can sing everything from bass to soprano, and that is
still "only" four octaves. I have three octaves myself, I can sing
tenor, alto and soprano. People underestimate just how much an octave
is.

Same thing with Carey. She generally sings pretty low, and then
screeches some piercing high notes. She doesn't actually sing that
high.

And let us not forget Joan Collins as The Siren on the Batman TV
series, a woman who put men under her spell by singing a note 3 octaves
above high C, and who once infamously announced:
"I want to become the wickedest woman in Gotham City - and thus in the
world!"
