Discussion:
Did 'SNL' Gaffe Expose Simpson Vocal Aid

NEW YORK (AP) - Singer Ashlee Simpson's "extra help" may have been exposed
when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice - singing the wrong
song - while she held a microphone at her waist.

Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for
Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song
"Autobiography" on the network comedy show.

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier
in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and
the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and
the vocal was quickly silenced.

Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage
35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.

"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him
at the end of the show. "Live TV."

"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong
song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."

Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch.
Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of
Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common - although
almost always unspoken - concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by
mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to
the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.

Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night
Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of
anonymity.

A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on
"SNL": Elvis Costello stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead
O'Connor tearing up a picture of the pope.

Wow. I don't even think Ashlee Simpson fans (if there are any left after
this debacle) would buy *that* load of crap.

Busted!!! I don't know why anyone would want to listen to, or look at
either one of these dim-bulb big bird look-a-likes. I taped SNL like I
always do. Watched it closely today. Not only did she not sing the
first song, the band didn't even play! All recorded!!! Someone
evidently forgot to load the tape [ or disc ] If you watch the bass
player it's easy to see. Not even close. Reminded me of a ZZ Top
concert I walked out of about 8 years ago.

Yea, everyone does this... But usually it's just piped into their own
ears via those stupid massive earplug things...

During her first song, tho, you could hear the different pitches of the
prerecorded and her real voice. Silly notalent pop stars...

Ummm, NO! NOT EVERYONE DOES THIS!
No Talent Hacks like Madonna, britney spears, the simpsons, Jacksons,
etc.... do this.

Have you ever watched that stupid MTV show with that dumb blonde Simpson
and her pretty boy husband? How come those two idiots never sit down at the
piano and write songs? WHy doesn't Nick pick up the guitar and write
something?

They don't know anything about music! That's Why!

I doubt Jimi Hendrix Lip-Synced....You know why? Because He had some ACTUAL
Talent! Do The Allman Brothers Lip Sync? The Dead? Jane's Addiction? Pearl
Jam? Nirvana, Bob Dylan, oOr any other TRUE Artist?

Unfortunately these "artists" make millions off of idiots who have no clue
what music really is. It's a shame that our society is made up of so many
stupid people. People kept buying Milli Vanillia albums/posters/etc long
after they knew they couldn't sing, just because they were "cute".

PATHETIC!

Stephen Tyler uses them all the time. You always see him yanking them
out of his ears so he can hear what's really going on.

Look for the wired earplugs next time you see some concert footage.
You'll be suprised.

I have no idea whether Steven Tyler lip synches or sings along with a
backing track or not. But I do know this: If you're going to sing
along with a live band you HAVE to be able to hear yourself. This can
be accomplished by means of a monitor speaker or earphones, or both.
The presence of wired earplugs proves nothing.

For many performers these are used in lieu of having the floor monitors
aimed up at them. Wearing them in the ears also keeps the decibel level
down on their ears. Think of being in that screaming loud concert hall
night after night and what it would do to your ears if you didn't plug them
with something. Pete Townsend of the Who is damn near deaf from it.

They don't know anything about music! That's Why!
Bingo! She's nothing but a manufactured act that they wanted to rush out
there while they could still cash in on the novelty of her being Jessica's
sister before Jessica becomes a footnote in pop culture. Both of thier
albums were prewritten by a bunch of fat and balding 40 year olds. If she
holds *any* writing credit to the record, it's probably nothing more than
adding a strum of a guitar or an added lip sync here or there...

Another thing that pisses me off is that you see Ashlee wearing these Led
Zeppelin and Doors tshirts, when she doesn't know a damn thing about their
music and probably can't name a song past Stairway and Light my Fire.
Oooohhh, yeah...you're a bad ass tough guy rebel. An Avril Lavigne and
Alanis Morrissette wannabe. She probably listens to that hip hop crap like
everyone else. What a chickenshit thing for her to blame it on her band.
The band should have fired her as their singer. Then her dad says acid
reflux ruined her voice...blah blah blah...just admit that you can't sing
and you wanted the live performance to sound good to potential new fans, so
you lip synched the studio cut. Too bad Solid Gold isn't on the air
anymore....

No worries, her shelf life is almost up. Did you ever see her on that
stupid MTV show they had? It shows her as a teenage brat living behind
Jessica's shadow, driving her own brand new Lexus and acting like a primma
donna bitch every chance she could get. If it wasn't for Jessica, she would
never have had the exposure. If it wasn't for Jessica's breasts, SHE
wouldn't have had any exposure.
